EDTA is extensively used initially for the chemical compounds ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. These colorless, water-soluble solid is widely used to dissolve scale. The usefulness of compound arises because of its role as a chelating agent, i.e. its ability to "sequester" metal ions such as Ca2+ and Fe3+. Its melting point is 237-245ºC, boiling point is 614.2 °C at 760 mmHg, and flash point is 325.2 °C.
